The GAP Festival La Bohème
Matthew will make his role debut as Marcello at The Gap Festival, Oxford.
Now firmly established as a highlight of the Festival calendar, GAP Festival Opera returns to Streatley Farmhouse for three nights of glorious music in a wonderful setting.
Goring soprano Stephanie Bodsworth has assembled a cast of critically-acclaimed professional singers and musicians to perform Puccini’s enduringly popular masterpiece, La Bohème.
The opera, sung here in an English translation by Director Martin Lamb, follows a group of young, impoverished artists living in Paris’s Latin Quarter whose joys and heartbreaks culminate in the tragic love story between the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimì. The singers will be accompanied by a six piece professional ensemble conducted by music director Katrine Reimers.
The opera is staged in a magnificent 18th century barn transformed into an atmospheric theatre with a set designed by another Goring resident, international opera designer Ilka Weiss assisted by Lighting Designer Bruce Williams.
Opera Holland Park - Die Fledermaus
Matthew will sing the role of Frank this summer.
Johann Strauss II’s irrepressible comedy of flirtation and intrigue among Vienna’s poseurs, frenemies and round-the-clock party people
Sparring frenemies and working-class wannabes return to Opera Holland Park in a sparkling new production. Will Doctor Falke get his revenge on Gabriel von Eisenstein for the embarrassing incident with the bat costume? Can Frank convince Count Orlofsky and his guests that he is a Frenchman born and bred? And why does that actress look so very much like Rosalinde’s maid?
Excess is the order of the day as three of the company’s favourite leading ladies, sopranos Alison Langer (La traviata 2021 and 2025, Pagliacci2024, Carmen 2023) and Rebecca Bottone (Itch 2023 and 2025, Flight2015), and mezzo-soprano Clare Presland (Il segreto di Susanna 2019 and 2024, The Bear 2021), don various disguises and assumed names to join tenor Thomas Atkins (Eugene Onegin 2023) in a Viennese whirl of a plot of romantic intrigues and costume balls. Rising star George Jackson (Così fan tutte 2018) returns to conduct a score that fizzes with dances and drinking songs from across the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

A lavish Parisian party is a grand occasion for dancing, drinking, and (in)discreet love affairs. But Baron Zeta, the ambassador to the fictional cash-strapped state of Pontevedro, has a slightly more serious matter on his mind. Among his party guests is Hanna Glawari. Hanna is the glamorous Pontevedrian widow who arrived in Paris to enjoy her late husband’s immense fortune. Baron Zeta cannot bear the thought of Pontevedro losing half its national wealth should Hanna marry a Parisian. So, he assigns the charismatic Count Danilo to watch over her heart. But little does he know that they have quite the history...
Director John Savournin (Opera Highlights Spring 2022) brings his joyful touch to Lehár’s waltz-filled charmer. Designer takis brings his dynamic visuals to the romance. A new English translation by Savournin and David Eaton makes the opera’s wit sparkle, with the cast to be announced later in 2024.
